This morning Brixton commuters were treated to three fully working escalators, meaning they were able to get inside the station without queuing behind barriers out onto the street.

However, their joy will be short-lived as work resumes tomorrow.

Ann-Marie Gannon tweeted: “There were scenes of elation at #Brixton tube this morning, as all three escalators were open again. For one (glorious) day only.”

Refurbishment of two escalators began in January and TfL says will last until July.

The work has caused huge queues during rush hour – often reaching past H&M on the high street.

Engineers are taking one out of use at a time. Today the first refurbished escalator was back in action but tomorrow work begins on the second.

Kat Feather tweeted: “Practically skipped through #Brixton station this morning. who knew 2 working escalators could bring so much #joy?! Back to 1 tomorrow. Gaah.”
