Brixton spirits are multiplying

Hard on the heels of Brixton rum comes Brixton gin.

Long-term Brixton resident and shop owner Andrew Murray-Watson has teamed up with local businesses to create Brixton’s latest spirit.

Brixton Gin contains a range of locally available botanicals including Brixton Bees raw honey.

The company behind the gin is also teaming up with Brixton-based Urban Growth, an organisation that transforms neglected urban sites into flourishing gardens – including the Brixton Orchard.

It will be growing botanicals for the gin locally, including a key ingredient, juniper.

Brixton Gin contains nine botanicals including hibiscus and wood violet.

It is “a fragrant and zesty gin that is markedly different from the countless London dry gins on the market,” says Andrew, who owns Guzzl in Brixton Village and who has lived in the neighbourhood for nearly 20 years.

He and his partner wanted to create a gin that stood out from the crowd.

“We have set out to make a gin that tastes great, but which is also markedly different.

“We also wanted to support the local economy – so that’s why we are using as many locally sourced and produced botanicals as possible,” he said.

On the label is Gustav Greis, a local showman who was commonly seen on Brixton High Street in his zebra-drawn carriage in around 1910-1912.

A 70cl bottle of Brixton Gin costs £34.95 and is available at www.brixtongin.co.uk and selected retailers including Guzzl.

It is best served with a lighter tonic such as Fever Tree Refreshingly Light, says Andrew.

You can also now order online from Andrew’s shop at www.guzzl.co.uk with free local delivery within three miles of the shop and overnight UK-wide shipping.
