Brixton one of 100 Post Offices to go

The Post Office has confirmed that, as we reported in November, it is to let go of Brixton and more than 100 other directly owned “Crown” Post Offices.

The current Brixton premises on Ferndale Road, part of the Department Store redevelopment by architects Squire and Partners, opened in July 2016 on the site of a former fire station’s stables.

The 108 Crown Post Offices will either close or be taken over to be run as a franchise.

An early franchisee, WH Smith, which runs the Streatham Post Office, is itself to disappear – being rebranded as TG Jones – apart from shops in transport hubs and hospitals.

The Post Office transfers are due to be completed by the autumn.

It is understood that the fate of the Brixton office will be known soon.

Other nearby Post Offices to be affected include East Dulwich and Croydon.

Santander Bank in Brixton is to close on 11 August. Barclays’ Brixton branch closed in July 2023.

  1. Things we need just vanishing into thin air, because someone needs to make more money and our “government” are owned. Endless austerity
