There were tragic scenes this morning as a helicopter crashed into a crane in Vauxhall. Two have been confirmed dead – including the pilot and a bystander – with at least nine other casualties.
The media has been awash with harrowing images and reports from eye-witnesses. Many more were affected as emergency services attended the scene, with traffic backing-up as far as Brixton Hill.
Lambeth Council Leader, Lib Peck, sent out messages of condolence for the families and friends of the victims – as well as praise for the response of the emergency services. “Our first thoughts are with the families and friends of those who lost their lives in Vauxhall this morning” she tweeted. Peck also lauded the “amazing response from the emergency services who were at the Vauxhall scene so quickly & working so hard to care for those affected.” She said that the council will be “seeking reassurances about procedures on helicopter flights in London – as always our main concern is the safety of residents”.
