Two pupils from Brixton’s Evelyn Grace Academy who may have saved a woman’s life when they kicked down the door of her burning house, have each won an achievement award and £250 to spend on their school.

Kayde Rodney and Deno Mebrahitu, both 13, went to the aid of the woman whose house was on fire. After breaking down her door to help her flee the blaze, they called the fire brigade.

The school only found out about this act of bravery when the fire brigade told it.

Kayde and Deno each got a £250 Jack Petchey Achievement Award. They decided to spend part of it on school uniforms for pupils and part was put towards a school trip to Thorpe Park.

More than 100 young people from schools across Lambeth were at the Jack Petchey Foundation Achievement Awards ceremony at Broadway Theatre in Catford last night (11 July).

They were nominated for a variety of achievements big and small.

Youth organisations and schools in Lambeth have received nearly £1m from the foundation since funding started in 2006.

Lambeth mayor Cllr Saleha Jaffer thanked the foundation for supporting students in Lambeth.

Sir Jack Petchey launched his foundation in 1999 to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential.

Since then it has backed 2,000 initiatives supporting young people across London and Essex, investing £100m.

Sir Jack, 90, said: “I am passionate about our awards scheme which enables young people to be recognised, valued and rewarded for their achievements and positive contributions to society.”
