Sign this petition to halt eviction of Brixton traders by Network Rail

A petition has been started to call on Network rail to immediately stop the planned eviction of dozens of Brixton businesses from arches on Station Road and Atlantic Road.

Sign the petition now.

Network Rail staff visited businesses, like A & C Continental Deli,  yesterday informing them that all shops in arches between Brixton Road and Popes Road had just 6 months to vacate their premises, to make way for redevelopment of the site.

Brixton Blog this evening started a petition calling on rail bosses to stop the eviction plans, before carrying out a full discussion with traders and local residents and customers.

The petition – signed by 50 people in its first 10 minutes – also calls on Lambeth council to do more to support affected business owners and put pressure on Network Rail.

Sign the petition, and share, here.

  1. I’ve seen the “redevelopment” and “upgrading” that went on at Borough Market and Spitalfields Markets, both of which are crap ever since. Borough is nothing more than a feeding trough at weekends & Spitalfields is a ghost town. Nothing there, nobody WANTS to go there. Brixton has something truly unique & should be supported. Tearing the heart out of the community would only bring anger and despair. This way there is something everyone can engage in and make a contribution. Many of the businesses have been present for decades and serve the community well. If the councillors and Network Rail don’t like it, they can go and shop in the west end.

Lambeth have sold off loads of social housing and have left properties to fall down through lack of care.
On top of that it has not bothered to act on its right to take over private landlords empty properties and house the homeless.
Its supported Blairite/Thatcher economics created by Milton Friedman that was totally at odds with the needs of the poor.
Where do you see this “trickle Down” effect?
In reality they have and continue to support the trickle up effect that will see more Quantative Easing that will make us all poorer, by giving your wealth to banks. Yes the same banks that went bankrupt through their own greed and incompetence.
It is this that has caused the cuts and is why now the Labour council has to sell of homes and break up communities like Cressingham Gardens. Seen here.
Of course the new homes will not be “affordable” to the less well off let alone the poor.
expensive new flat overlooking the park will not be going to the present residents. That make the Labour council complisit with social clensing. The poor dont deserve to live in nice places. Not with this council.
In the 50s 60s and 70s Lambeth build some of the countries best most delightful, award winning social housing that improved many peoples lives and still does. but now the present council is bent of pulling them down.
In truth Labour are still Following Thatcherite policies.
Its incompetence, lack of vision, lack of planning and shows their real disregard for people. But worse, far worse than that is that this shows that they have lost their ideals, they don’t instinctively know where they are going or what kind of economy will work or have any debate on the nature of society. Lambeth council are a self congratulatory bunch of nodding dogs, all l inning up to slap each others backs while desperately trying to patch up their previous mistakes.
The only Party that has given any real support for the Cressingham Gardens residents, is the Green Party. Indeed Councillor Ainsly And Jonathan Bartley have be swamped by desperate residents from all over Lambeth all of whom are threatened by the councils sell offs. Many estates, very many people and many comunities will all suffer from Lambeth’s lack of ability and imagination.
I was in the council meeting of the 27th and one thing i did note is that the Labour 98% majority did not even have an alternative budget worked out! At least have a non austerity budget worked out just in case you win the general election would not be too much to ask.
Labour are carrying out Thatcherite policies weather told to or not.
Ask yourself, did Lambeth get better after the election?

  3. I’ve jujst written a long comment about Lambeth Labour Council an it’s involvement in the gentrification of Brixton and closure of local Brixton businesses and it has all been deleted! Am I right in believing that Lambeth Council does not want the truth to be told about what it is doing in destroying and gentrifying Brixton? Or am I just paranoid, along with the populace of Brixton?

  4. Huge uproar about this. Every one of those businesses is unique and thriving because of the personal touch. Community spirit is what makes Brixton so special. Each cafe is a melting pot, with their own cultural flavour and a warm welcome for everyone. . They want to dump that for the corporate and impersonal chains.. They have misjudged the people of Brixton. This will not be without a hell of a fight.

  5. This action has been taken by Network Rail who want to make structural and cosmetic improvements to many of the arches between Brixton and Loughborough Junction. But I’m told by jack Hopkins, the Cabinet Member for Jobs and Growth that he has met with most of the affected businesses.. He will now work out how the Council can best support the businesses.

He’s also running a surgery for businesses with Network Rail on 24 Feb.

The Council is working and must work with NR on the exciting regeneration plans for Brixton, but as Councillors in Brixton we will stand with businesses if they are not being treated correctly by NR, and we will make sure we retain the best of Brixton’s character.

  6. Please don’t take away what makes Brixton unique and brilliant – its long-established local businesses
