Three Brixton bands – including Poeticat – play The Grosvenor on Friday

Long term blog contributor and local musician Catherine Martindale of the band Poeticat tells us about their upcoming gig with two other Brixton bands this Friday night.

Poeticat

Hello all. I thought I should write something so you all know about this because it’s worth knowing about. We are putting on a gig at The Grosvenor on July 11th.  We (Poeticat) are playing alongside our friends and fellow Brixton bands Mangoseed and Big Joanie.

The Grosvenor is a wonderful live music resource in the area which we are losing in August due to ‘lifestyle’ apartments being built across the road. So not only is this an opportunity to witness some of the great talent coming out of the area but also it’s a chance to submerge yourself in an old-school punk venue which you won’t get a chance to be submerged in again.

Here is something about the bands to entice you:

Poeticat: With roots in London and Lisbon, Poeticat is an energetic and unique rock band infusing elements of progressive, experimental and psychedelic music with a punk attitude.

Mangoseed
Mangoseed

Mangoseed are a band comprising of a Trinidadian, a Jamaican, an Irish and a Australian. Formed in 2008 by frontman Nicholai La Barrie and guitarist Karlos Coleman, Mangoseed fuse funk guitar riffs and rock bass with a poetical hip hop lyrical delivery to create their own unique sound. Mangoseed are known for their highly energetic live shows and their eclectic sound, drawing from genres that range from reggae to funk.

Big Joanie
Big Joanie

Big Joanie are a Black feminist punk band that describe themselves as ‘The Ronettes filtered through 80s DIY/Riot grrrl with a sprinkling of dashikis‘. Band members Chardine, Kiera and Steph are based in London and recorded their latest release in their lounge.

The other thing which I think is really nice about our events at that we have a really good crowd of local regulars who are like-minded because they are open minded. It’s a good place to make new friends in the area. You don’t have to wear any special clothes (unless you want to) or be any specific way, it is just people in Brixton enjoying good music together.

So come, hang out, say hello and see if we tickle your eardrums.

The Grosvenor, 17 Sidney Road, Stockwell SW9 OTP. Friday 11th July, 7:30pm, £5.
