All over London, places of architectural renown, political import and historical interest will be opening their doors for the public to explore this weekend for Open House London weekend. And Brixton is no exception.
Our favourite place, the Brixton Windmill, is holding full tours from 1.30-4.30pm today and that’s alongside the Harvest Festival in Blenheim Garden hosted by the Friends of Brixton Windmill. There’ll be bread and cakes from another favourite – the Old Post Office Bakery.
For a touch of civic pride, pop into Lambeth Town Hall for a tour of the Edwardian building – it was built in 1905 after the new borough of Lambeth was formed and old Town Hall at Kennington Green deemed too small for its big responsibilities. Councillors will be giving tours from 10am-4pm on Saturday and Sunday.
And last but not least, there’ll be regular tours around the 1930s art deco Brockwell Lido. Anyone who has swum there has probably seen the extent of it, but no doubt there will be some fun facts along the way.
If you have a strong urge to leave the confines of Brixton (ahem), you can see what else is happening in Lambeth here or indeed in the rest of London here.
And if that isn’t enough, watch out for the Lambeth Open Studio weekend on October 6 and 7.
Just took the Lambeth Town Hall tour with Clr Ed Davie and it was really interesting – local government deserves more attention…
