Brixton Rec nominated to become listed building

Brixton RecAn architectural organisation has applied to Historic England for the Brixton Recreation Centre to become a listed building.

DOCOMOMO, a non-profit organisation devoted to the documentation and conservation of buildings, sites and neighbourhoods of the modern movement, has applied for the Brixton Rec to be listed in recognition of its architectural, social and community significance.

Brixton Recreation Users Group Committee says it supports the application and believes the listing will protect the Rec’s unique architectural features – such as the pool, the atrium and sports hall – as well as the huge range of recreational facilities for the future.

The group also said the listing would “celebrate and recognise the vital role the centre has played in the cultural and social life of Brixton residents, through a history of turbulent change”.

Listing would also ensure that any major changes proposed by Lambeth Council would have to be explained and justified publicly.

BRUG is asking supporters to tell Historic England why the Rec is important to them. Email applicationssouth@historicengland.org.uk, with the reference 1434761 (copy to recusergroup@btinternet.com).
