At least two local institutions are working with Crisis, the homeless charity. Brockwell Lido will host its Icebreaker fundraiser on Saturday 15 December and Brixton coffee roaster Volcano is working to create a special blend for the Café from Crisis initiative.
15% of all sales of the blend by Volcano Coffee Works in the Department Store building will go to the charity.
As well as being available at Café from Crisis sites in London, Oxford and Newcastle, it will be available online from the Volcano website.
The sustainable blend will be sourced from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a Brazilian female-only enterprise, AMECAFE.
It is, says Volcano, rich-bodied with a sweet edge, featuring notes of blackcurrant, hazelnuts and cinnamon.
Volcano prides itself on transparency and honesty, only working with partners and importers who promote sustainability and build close relationships with small farmers and their coffee-growing communities. The Brixton roastery is also leading the way in the UK with 100% biodegradable and fully compostable pods.
Volcano founder Kurt Stewart said: “Volcano is built on the ethos of ethically traded coffee, which means working with partners who feed profits into community-based improvements.
“The benefits of ethical trade stretch far beyond just the farmer growing the coffee.
“It runs through the entire production chain and we pleased that, by partnering with Crisis, we are supporting local community projects in the UK as well.”
