Two of Brixton’s most treasured shops now have a single owner, as Diverse founder Anita Thorpe has taken over Brixton Wholefoods following the retirement of its founder Hilary Waterfield.
Wholefoods, whose 45-year status as a much-loved Brixton institution has been confirmed by popular support, was in danger of closing until Anita stepped in.
“There’s lots of work to be done to turn the business round,” she says, “but we hope that with the support of the community and our followers, the business will flourish and thrive.
“Stop by and have a look at the amazing selection of natural foods, remedies, herbs and roots on offer.”
Diverse itself – a wonderful gift shop and more – has been around on Coldharbour Lane for more than 25 years.
“Diverse was a hobby that grew,” says Anita. “I had no great plan or grand vision when I started out; I just wanted to sell lovely things that put a smile on people’s faces and reflected Brixton’s multicultural vibe.
“The mission we have today – to provide a retail platform for artists and makers of colour – came later.”

I am a representative of the vegan community and have been a vegan since 2008. I used to shop at Brixton Wholefoods. Brixton Wholefoods do not sell animal products so I assume the new owners are vegans. Non vegans selling vegan food and drink to vegans stinks of exploitation of the vegan community.
