Brixton Tube station and the Victoria line tunnel northwards to Stockwell are set to have high-speed mobile phone coverage by the end of summer.
Coverage will also be extended down the Northern line through Clapham to Morden, Transport for London (TfL) announced today (14 May).
About a quarter of below ground Tube stations and all of the new Elizabeth line’s stations have mobile coverage, allowing passengers to make and receive calls and access the internet and emails.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has committed to completing work to bring 4G and 5G coverage across all of the London Underground, Docklands Light Railway, London Overground and the Elizabeth line by the end of 2025.
The system, delivered in partnership with Boldyn Networks, will host a new emergency services network which, when fully operational, will give first responders immediate access to life-saving data, images and information in live situations and emergencies.
The tunnelled of the Victoria line section between Euston and Warren Street and other West End areas have begun to receive mobile coverage.
TfL said that that a significant proportion of the entire Tube network (around 80 per cent of its stations) as well as the entire Elizabeth line, remain on track to have mobile coverage by the end of 2024.
Around 500 people are working overnight across the Tube network to install mobile equipment, with all works needed to be tidied away before the network opens for customers each morning.
More than 2,000 kilometres of cabling and thousands of radios are due to be installed in tunnels and stations, all of them fitted outside operational hours.
