The Brixton-based Pegasus Opera Company has launched a mentoring programme as a launchpad for the next generation of opera singers from BAME backgrounds.
It will be led by professionals at the forefront of diversity in opera, including Sir Willard White, Alison Buchanan, Maureen Brathwaite, Ronald Samm, Keel Watson and opera manager Sam Krum.
The BAME-led company said it had launched the scheme in response to the underrepresentation of BAME classical singers on opera stages,
It will match emerging talent with established BAME singers who have performed leading roles at internationally renowned opera houses.
Artists who have incredible talent but lack opportunity will be able to access high quality mentoring from the safety, accessibility and convenience of their own home during this difficult period for performers.
“With the Black Lives Matter movement currently dominating the news cycle, this is a critical and positive moment for programmes like this to contribute to making a difference in the arts industry, by offering opportunities that enable BAME artists to thrive and flourish under the mentorship of those who have been at the forefront of diversity in the arts,” Pegasus said in a statement.

Pegasus is a registered charity and has a long track record of high quality productions and developing a new audience – presenting productions they can identify with.
“We strive to break down the elitist perceptions so often associated with opera,” said Pegasus producer Jordan Mullineaux.
