Album of the week: Dread Beat an’ Blood by Linton Kwesi Johnson (Poet And The Roots)

Each week our music editor Dave Randall picks an album (with a local connection) you need to hear …

We are currently witnessing one of the biggest uprisings in the USA since at least 1968 and Black Live Matter protests are taking place here too.

It seems fitting therefore to choose an album that reminds us that here in Brixton the struggle against racism, injustice and police brutality has being going on for very many decades.

Linton Kwesi Johnson’s poems are so powerful they leave you with the taste of blood in your mouth, the smell of petrol in your nose and a righteous anger in your belly.

This is his first album from 1978 and it features a band led by another reggae legend Dennis Bovell. Enjoy Dread Beat An’ Blood.
