Queuing for the supermarket has long lost any novelty it may, or may not, have held. Have a day off in the name of supporting Brixton businesses that offer takeaway services, says Abby Jones. Here is a round up of her top ten places to get some good grub, as take away.
NEGRIL – Negril has long been my favourite takeaway treat. Jamaican food at its best – jerk chicken, ribs, platters, fish, plus an incredible spread of curries and stews.Part of their menu is ital, meaning it’s fully vegan, and packed with flavour. Their menu pleases the meaties and the veggies, every time.
KHAN’S OF BRIXTON – The traditional Punjab and South Indian cuisine from Khan’s is consistently delicious. Everything on their menu is good, all made with traditional spices and cooking techniques.
HALO BURGER – Oh yes, a veggie’s dream. Vegan junk food that tastes yum! When I’m feeling sorry for myself and don’t want to turn to the dark side of Mcdonald’s, I hit up Halo burger. These guys have nailed the vegan junk food; it tastes so good, and is much more friendly to our earth than the mooing burgers. If you want an ethical burger or ‘chicken’ nuggets that taste scarily like the real deal, this is the place.
ASHBY’S – Just opened in the nick of time is Ashby’s, your local grocery store. Get all your goodies, including tinned goods, tea, coffee, cakes, fruit, veg and cleaning bits, this is a super solution to keeping your cupboards and fridge stocked. No lining up at the shops here, just order online for delivery.
MAREMMA – Maremma has been very clever, and launched their new deli service. This takeaway collection means you can get freshly made, restaurant quality meals to cook in your oven at home. They also offer cheese, charcuterie, wine and fruit and veg boxes for collection. This is a great way to make an evening a bit special, by bringing the restaurant vibe, home.
THE ATHENIAN – A very simple menu, executed well, The Athenian offer tasty greek wraps, stuffed with fresh flavour and guaranteed to fill you up. They also offer 50% off for NHS staff. They are ethically minded, all packaging is plastic free, and they are no-food waste. The menu is short and simple, but choose any of these wraps, and you’ll be satisfied.
CAMILE THAI – Tasty Thai food from the team at Camile. They have a sleek menu including all the Thai classics, which makes for a top takeaway whatever the weather. Grab yourself some Tiger beers and a Camile Thai for a cosy night in.
YATAI – For an excellent sushi bowl, rice bowl or katsu curry, hit up YATAI for a fresh Japanese meal. All their dishes have nice clean flavours: a good pitstop for lunch or dinner.
500 DEGREES PIZZA – Cooked in a traditional wood-fired pizza oven, all the pizzas that come out of this place are top notch. They have all the classics and some rogue toppings too, all cooked with passion in, you guessed it, their 500 degree pizza oven.
F MONDAYS – You can collect fresh fruit and veg, and bakery goods from F Monday, by ordering online and collecting. They have a rather lovely little collection hatch at the front of shop.
You should also try Blank Brixton on Acre Lane. Great food, great coffee, wonderful people.
