Help available to host a local Play Street on Car Free Day

Street participating in Car Free DayLambeth communities are being urged to organise regular “play streets” by closing their road for a few hours a week or month.

Car Free Day, 22 September, would be a good time to start, say campaigners. But applications close on 1 August  to host a Play Street in Lambeth, so there’s only a few days left.  You can apply here.

Some support is available from Lambeth council and the London Play charity, but residents are expected to run the closure and supervise children themselves.

Residents act as marshals to allow neighbours to drive to and from their homes at walking pace.

If you want to run an ongoing Play Street and are able to hold an event on Car Free Day, Play Street offers to help make the first one special by providing an activity for every street closed on Car Free Day including Smoothie Bike, Dr Bike mechanic or static bike racing.

To help minimise costs Play Streets has free starter packs with fun things for children to play with and two road closure signs. www.londonplay.org.uk
