Van Gogh bust unveiled in Brixton

Sculptor Anthony Padgett installed a bust of the great Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh in Van Gogh Walk off the Brixton Road yesterday (16 November).

The bust is one of seven he will place in sites in England, Holland, Belgium and France as part of his A Year With Vincent project.

Padgett was joined in Van Gogh Walk by the wall of Durand school by Shaun Traynor, author of the poem Van Gogh in Brixton, who is a former teacher at the school.

He read his poem (video above) by the bust, accompanied by Anthony Padgett, to a small audience of local volunteers who tend the striking ornamental flower beds in the pedestrian walkway.

The bust stands under two olive trees – which are bearing fruit after this year’s long and hot summer.

Participants celebrated later in Café Van Gogh on Brixton Road.
