Brixton event will focus on the positives

Young people in Brixton – with help from adult mentors – are defying stereotypical images of local youth.

Young artists working with Empower from Within (EFW) an artistic development programme, hosted a Christmas party for Project Smith Community Connectors.

Now they are getting ready for an open mic event, one of a monthly series, at BRICKS, (The Ton of Brix) 414 Coldharbour Lane, SW9 8LF, on Thursday 23 January 7 to 11pm.

The intergenerational Christmas party saw young artists from the programme perform.

The open mic event will include board games, a talent showcase, networking, and merchandise promotion by a young entrepreneur who has completed the EFW programme and who is also co-producing the event.

He is the artist known as JAGO XYEN – conscious rapper , creative and now a business entrepreneur,  with his own clothing label called WRLD XYEN.

He recently produced an event at Pop Brixton which was a huge success, and his brand WRLD XYEN also featured in an EFW fashion show at the end of 2024.

He says the mentoring he received over the years has assisted him a great deal to develop.

“JAGO XYEN’s dedication is to achieve,” says Michelle Killington, who runs EFW, “his passion for and striving in the creative world, from events management, through rapping, and the world of fashion, is admirable and encouraging to any young person seeking a purpose in life.”

Finding The Gemzz (FTG) another organisation providing assistance with the event, provides creatives with a network bringing people with different skills together to showcase their creative ability.

The monthly residency at BRICKS is a celebration of creative art and expression from local talent showcasing their gifts in a safe space.

“It is a great way to network with young people who are positively making great choices in their lives by being part of a creative community where self-expression is valued and appreciated.” says Michelle.

“JAGO XYEN is a statement of how effective mentoring pathways can be.

“JAGO XYEN’s work in the community as a creative is testament to how effective mentoring can help young people.”

“Serious youth violence is a terrifying topic, with many projects advocating and working to end it.

“The work of the three organisations putting on the show at BRICKS highlights the strengths of young people themselves to focus on their positives, by assisting them to consider a career, or further education options into a creative future role.”
