George Stephen from Brixton is running the London Marathon in support of Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust, fulfilling a 17 year-old promise to his school friend Tom Maxwell whose family set up the charity after his mother died of cervical cancer.
Jo Maxwell passed away in 1999, leaving her husband Jamie and three children; Tom, Lucy and Alexander. Following Jo’s death her husband Jamie set up Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust which to this day is the only UK charity dedicated to women affected by cervical cancer and cervical abnormalities.
George says: “Having promised Tom when we were 11 that I would one day run the marathon for Jo’s I am very proud to be fulfilling that promise this year. It is a cause that means a huge amount to me having known both Jo and Jamie. I will be thinking of them when the pain kicks in!”
Delighted by his friend’s determination, Tom says: “It is particularly special to have George running in the marathon for Jo’s because he is someone who has been there for me since the beginning. He and I were at school together from 11 to 18, and so he knew Mum and Dad, and he and his family have been huge supporters of Jo’s ever since Dad set it up.”
