Your guide to what’s happening in Brixton this week.
Tuesday 23: Head down to Whirled Cinema for its Women in Horror Month event: with eight shorts by female directors, followed by a panel featuring special guests Barbie Wilde, Nicholas Vincent, Jessica Messenger and Abigail Backmore and finishes with a soon-to-be announced feature film from a female director. Doors 7pm. £7.50.
Wednesday 24: Brixton Knitting Group aka “Stitch and Bitch” have a gathering every Wednesday at Effra Social. Bring your own needles and wool, drink a beer, munch some food and have a good ‘ole natter. Beginners welcome.Free. 7pm to 11pm.
Thursday 25: Carnival Late at The Horniman museum promises a carnival mash up: heading for Brazil, Venice and New Orleans for an evening of music, samba dancing, carnival parades, fire performances and much more. Food and bars open. £5. 6.30–9.30pm.
Thursday: Learn samba and stay fit to live drumming at the Brixton Recreation centre every Thursday. Beginners and intermediate. 8pm to 9pm. £8.
Friday 26: Firmly cemented in the house and techno scene, Midland is joined by San Francisco’s DJ collective Honey Soundsystem. Doors for the bar open from 6pm, the DJs start at 10pm. Adv £5, door £10.
Saturday 27: Feeling the cold? Ants, renowned as one of Ibiza’s top music gatherings, is in London for the first time at Electric Brixton and says it can recreate the magic in a London February. With Andrea Oliva, Lauren Lane, Noir, Secondcity, Waze & Odyssey. 11pm to 6am.
Sunday 28: The South London Botanical Institute in Tulse Hill is holding a Victorian Variety Day. Visitors can enjoy a celebration of Victorian culture with a variety of activities throughout the day, for both adults and children, including talks, floristry, block-printing and games and the opportunity to learn about the historical aspect of botany and the significance of flowers and plants to the Victorians. Those in Victorian costume will be rewarded with a free piece of cake . Refreshments available, accompanied by music hall songs. Free.
Sunday: Brixton Unitarians will be holding a special service to commemorate the life of David Bowie at the Effra Road Chapel. The service, which starts at 10.15am, will include a live band playing a selection of the Brixton legend’s hits, with plenty of opportunity to sing along. Free.
