Brixton Pub Review – Elm Park Tavern

Elm Park TavernThe Space

Having undergone a revamp in recent years, the Elm Park Tavern is now a sturdy SW2 local. It’s homely and welcoming, with books lining the walls and windows and a pile of board games by the door. It has a quirky grandeur to it. There is an imposing, dark-wood, central bar, an impressive array of taxidermy and the obligatory selection of leather Chesterfields.

The Punters

Most of Leander Road and Elm Park on pub quiz night. But normally there’s a steady flow of bar-side regulars, young professionals and anyone who fancies popping in for a cosy pint. A very friendly and chilled crowd.

The Booze

There is a good selection of booze on offer. In terms of local brews – the pub stocks ales from Brixton Brewery and By the Horns from Wandsworth.

The Grub

There isn’t any – other than an unusually wide-range of bar snacks. However, there’s a bit of a bring-your-own-food culture, and you’ll likely spot a few takeaway pizzas. Just ask at the bar for plates and cutlery.

Elm Park TavernThe Damage

The drinks are totally reasonable. The bar snacks are fairly priced and feel like good value – and they’re served in little tin mugs.

An Interesting Fact

This Halloween a Hollywood A list movie star dropped in for a spooky pint. It seems she is no alien to South London. I wonder who that might have been?

What’s a bit rubbish?

The lack of food. It’s a bit disappointing that they don’t do a Sunday roast, or even a bowl of chips.  But then you can always order takeaway.

What else thy got in the bag?

The Elm Park Tavern is all about the quiz. Book well in advance, as come 8.30pm every Thursday the pub is packed out. Matt’s quiz is just the right length and includes the all-important SCULPTURE ROUND. There is also a resident DJ (who just got back from touring with the Libertines) who plays every other Friday night, and they also show sport on the telly.

 To sum it up…

A superb local that I personally wish was much closer to my house.

  1. Very relaxed pub that has gently gentrified with the area but still full of character(s). Glad to call it my local.
