There was something out of the ordinary on Brixton Hill on Sunday, as bleary eyed Brixtonites were treated to the sight of hundreds of veteran cars as they spluttered their way towards Brighton.

As this picture by Owen Lewellyn and posted to the Brixton Blog Flickr page shows, the ‘light locomotives’ passed through Brixton, and for some the slight incline at Brixton Hill was a struggle.

All the vehicles on the Bonhams Veteran Car Run were built pre-1905 and the annual event celebrates the passing of the Locomotives on the Highway act in 1896. The act saw the raising of the speed limit for light locomotives from 4mph to 14mph. Do you have pictures of the event? Email us newsdesk@brixtonblog.com.
