Its not the 1st fire there, last year the kitchen caught fire and was billowing out the whole building.
This shop used to belong to Mr Williams, a hard Jamaican Tailor who worked by himself well into his 80’s. I had a few few suits adjusted by him and although his failing eyesight warranted the an occasional unconventional stitch, stepping into his world was a fascinating experience.
He would show me a book with some of the stylish and contemporary designs of the 60’s and 70’s – I always promised him that I’d have him make one for me.
Time passed and then one day, to my utter sadness, his historic and humble workshop was being ripped out by developers. It took less than a week for the evidence of his lifelong commitment to transform into another undistinguished and confused business.
I’m not sure what ever happened to Mr Williams, I guess part of me didn’t want to know. I am though, happy that I met him.
