It was only a matter of time before the Brixton area got its smattering of boutique hotels and, indeed, one is about to open just up the road in Tulse Hill.
The Tulse Hill Hotel will open in a former public house next to the station next month with nine bedrooms, a gastro pub open to the public and private dining room. The owners kept much of the original signage and features of the old pub in doing it up. There’ll be all the pre-requisites of a trendy refurbishment – wooden panelling, a reclaimed 1920s bar and wooden parquet flooring.
A spokesperson for the new venue said: “It is housed in a beautiful early Victorian period building that dates back to 1840 when it was originally the Tulse Hill Tavern.
“The boutique hotel will boast nine unique and beautifully appointed bedrooms as well as a restaurant, private dining room seating up to 14 people, chef’s table which will host up to five guests, a bar and lounge area and a landscaped garden seating area.”
She added: “The exterior will retain much of the original architectural detail, maintaining the original signage and copper lanterns, whilst the interior will feature design aspects such as wooden parquet flooring, wooden paneling and a reclaimed 1920’s bar.”
I got to the opening tonight, didn’t actually do the tour of the hotel part. It was very busy with several breweries giving samples and other drink tables so it was very crowded. Beer quality (cask) seemed good but only 2 were being served at 6.40.
By the way unlike the drawing above the bar area ceiling is now painted black.
I live just down Norwood Rd (built 1885 Richard) so I hope this is a success although I wonder if people would want to stay there (remember Dex’s attempt at Boeing a DJ hotel before becoming Brixton Clubhouse, then POW?). I’d be interested to know what the target market is, as Tulse Hill hasn’t gentrified & it’s on a big giratory system!

Great info Richard and thank you for sharing. I heard from someone who’s family lived in Tulse Hill, that Princess Margaret occasionally and quite discretely use to visit the Tulse Hill Tavern when passing as she was good friends with the owners/landlord.
I am glad that it is being kept as a pub and not a supermarket or flats. This trend has to stop.

Well at least it is not to be turned into yet another Sainsbury’s or Tesco. The Tulse Hill Hotel has stood on this site for nearly 175 years. It has always been a tavern/pub even before the railway came to Herne Hill and Tulse Hill, long before the houses were built in the surrounding area and long before the roads were laid down. It stood on the old Norwood to Herne Hill muddy track then called Norwood Lane. It is one of the few remaing buildings in this area from the 19th century. The others being Tulse Hill rail station, St Martins in the Fields High School and the Sir Henry Tate Nursing Home both further along Tulse Hill. There is the odd house as well from that era but many have been converted into flats due to their huge size(s), a handful are on Upper Tulse Hill including on the Territorial Army site. However, most were demolished to make way for smaller builds during the 1920’s and 1930’s.
