The Brixton Blog will be among thousands of people are expected to line the route to wave flags and banners. While a free public event, with stalls and entertainment in Windrush Square,  will welcome the Olympic Torch shortly after midday.

Lambeth programme manager at the charity Chance UK, Caroline Hopkins, will carry the flag from 251 Coldharbour Lane to the junction with Barrington Road at 12.20pm today.

“I was chosen for my work in the community.  I was nominated by a colleague and I thought, ‘I don’t know if I’m going to get it, but that’s lovely.’

“I’m really, really excited. We’re going to try to get some mentors and children down to line the route. It’s about the local community getting involved.”

Cllr Sally Prentice, cabinet member for culture, leisure and the Olympics, said she was “absolutely thrilled” about the torch passing Loughborough Junction and Brixton.

She said:  “It is a very special day for Lambeth and I hope as many people as possible will come out and line the route, and take pictures to upload on the Brixton Blog.”

One special guest who will welcome the torch to Brixton on Thursday will be Dulwich and West Norwood MP and former Olympics minister Tessa Jowell.

Cllr Prentis said:  “The day will have a particular resonance for Tessa, who made a massive contribution to bringing the Games to London.

“It’s a great way to mark her involvement as it wouldn’t have happened without her.”

The torch will continue up Acre Lane and into Clapham before entering Wandsworth just before 1pm.
