Brixton Topcats Basketball Club has applied for funding from the Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund and needs votes to help them win.
The Topcats club, which was founded in 1981 by coach Jimmy Rogers, is hoping to use the £5000 provided by the fund for new projects such as basketball camps at half-term. The club has previously been unable to afford such camps, where the intensive training on offer can drastically change a player’s development.
The application by the Brixton Topcats states: “Without grants of this kind the club will have to cut back its work which has been the jewel in the crown for sport in Lambeth for over 30 years.”
Brixton Topcats has provided encouragement and inspiration to scores of young south Londoners since it started over 30 years ago. Its sporting alumni include Chicago Bulls All Star Luol Deng and several current Team GB players.
The Lloyds Banking Group Community Fund was created to support community groups helping young people in the UK. Lloyds is giving out £5000 to the two organisations with the most votes in each community, in this case ‘London – South West’.
