An online petition has been started by Brixton residents to save the Canterbury Arms pub from demolition.
Over 400 people have signed the petition that appeals to Conway Taverns, the current owner of the pub, to stop the sale and the proposed closure of the Victorian pub.
The landlord of the pub, Brian Fitzgerald, has been running the pub for over 20 years and is thought to be the longest running landlord in Brixton.
Michelle Fitzgerald, daughter of the landlord Brian Fitzgerald, said she was happy to see the local community trying to help their cause.
In an interview with the Brixton Blog earlier this month, Ms Fitzgerald said about the plans: “We were really taken aback. To most people it is just a pub, but to us it is a family home too. It is upsetting.”
May Developments, the likely buyer of the property, submitted a planning application earlier this year to demolish the old pub and replace it with a nine-storey residential development.
