Poetic Unity is a Brixton based charity whose vision is to give young people a voice and to empower them.
We use poetry as a tool to support young people create positive change in their lives and in society. After the announcement on the 23rd March 2020 that the UK would enter lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Poetic Unity took their services online.
In 133 days (19 weeks), the organisation has delivered 167 workshops and events online which have directly supported the confidence, self-esteem, personal development, and mental health of 386 people in the community (majority aged 11-30 years old).
In total their services have been used by and have indirectly benefited 6,678 people in total across the world from London, other parts of the UK, to the USA, to Canada, to Africa and Australia.
Poetic Unity was able to partner with The Prince’s Trust, Theatre Peckham, Southside Young Leaders Academy, Black Cultural Archives, and Streatham Space Project during this time to expand their services and reach more people.
They have also received support from celebrities such as Oritsé Williams (from JLS), Natalie Gumede (previously on Coronation Street and Strictly Come Dancing), and Suli Breaks (Spoken Word Poet with 9 million + views on YouTube and over 330,000 subscribers.)
