The coronavirus crisis may have forced Grove Adventure Playground to close its doors to physical play but volunteers are rolling their sleeves up to serve the local community.
Grove Adventure Playground has been working closely with The Healthy Living Platform and Lambeth council to help distribute desperately needed food and toiletries to the local community in Loughborough Junction during the Coronavirus pandemic. You can see the Grove volunteers in action in this short film.Grove’s Nick Lewis says: “The playground was asked to help because of the close relationship we have built with the community, our ability to prepare the site at short notice and to mobilise and safely manage a group of willing volunteers.
“Since the beginning of April, the playground has been delivering up to 40 large trays of supplies to 30 households feeding over 80 people each Wednesday.”
A recent delivery from the playground was filmed and made into a short video by Young Creators UK who worked under safe social distancing guidelines to create this film for the Playground, showcasing this work being done by volunteers during the lock-down.
Nick adds: “More information about recent events and activities, including some fascinating and amusing articles and features, can be found in our Newsletter for May 2020.
“The current crisis has forced the playground to close its doors to physical play at this time, but we continue to operate online play activities and are working hard to prepare for the difficult times ahead.
“Grove Adventure Playground was re-opened in 2018 by the efforts of the community, co-ordinated by the Loughborough Junction Action Group, (LJAG), and is now run by a dedicated group of workers and volunteers who are making a genuine change to the lives of many children and young people who live in Loughborough Junction, one of the most densely populated and deprived areas in the Capital.”
The playground is an open access, free, safe and supervised adventure playground for 6-14 year old children who get the opportunity to explore the world around them in a safe and secure environment, make new friends and learn new skills. The playground also provide fresh and nutritious food, drinks and snacks every day it is open.
