Brixton joins #RaiseTheBar campaign

    Many Brixton business have joined #RaiseTheBar campaign in partnership with industry trade bodies, politicians and partners across the UK including British BIDs, the BID Foundation and ATCM, to support businesses in the retail, hospitality and leisure sectors.

    Brixton BID, who have joined the campaign have created a film featuring many Brixton businesses calling for people to sign the petition and support Brixton’s independent venues.

    The #RaiseTheBar campaign was founded by Croydon Business Improvement District and Mr Fox pub in Croydon. The campaign launched on 21 April with an open letter to Rt. Hon. Alok Sharma MP Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy calling for the business rates threshold requirement in the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grant to be increased from £51,000 to £150,000 to save tens of thousands of retail, leisure and hospitality businesses from going under.

    The retail, hospitality and leisure sector is vital to the UK economy and campaigners believe it must be protected at all costs.

    “The retail industry alone generated £394 billion worth of sales in 2019 with 306,655 units across the UK. The UK leisure sector has reached over £111 billion in sales. The UK hospitality employs over 3.2 million people, that is 11% of UK jobs, making it the third largest sector in the UK, accounting for £130 billion in revenue. The economy needs these businesses to survive – #RaiseTheBar” read the poster for the campaign.

    The #RaiseTheBar campaign launched a Change.org petition on Thursday 23 April and is calling on the public to sign the petition to help save the nation’s High Streets. The petition needs to reach 10,000 signatures to be recognised by Government and has just over 1,000 signatures remaining to achieve this goal.
