Brixton Disco Festival – it’s a family affair

(sponsored blogpost) It’s coming this Saturday 28 April! The first ever Brixton Disco Festival celebrating 40 years of disco – and celebrating Brixton – with live music, DJs, screenings, talks, food and drink – all centred around Windrush Square and rolling out across five iconic venues – Electric Brixton, POW Club & Rooftop, The Ritzy & The Black Cultural Archives from 12 noon on Saturday 28 April until 4am Sunday .

Headliners include Jocelyn Brown LIVE, Joey Negro, Crazy P Soundsystem, Nicky Siano, Low Life (Bill Brewster, Ray Mang and Frank Broughton) and Nick the Record

The three organisers, Wayne Saunders of the POW, and his promoter pals Matt Braddock and Nicholas Bravette are clear they want it to be a community event. So they are starting the party with a free kids and family roller disco from Saturday noon to 3pm. There will be a specially constructed skating rink on Windrush Green outside the BCA and roller skates of all sizes will be provided along with a professional rink team to keep an eye on things. After 3pm the roller disco is ticketed for grown ups. So squeeze into your hot pants, slap on your biodegradable glitter and shake your booty.

They have also teamed up with the Brixton Night Market so they are hoping families will come down in the early evening to enjoy local food and drink and join in the fun. Locals Brixton Brewery is festival drinks partner and there will be donation points for the Brixton Soup Kitchen at all the venues.

The organisers also wrote personally to the residents around Windrush Square on 18 April, inviting them to come and join in, giving full details of what was happening when and where – and explaining the Windrush Square activities would be from 12:00 noon until 10:00pm and ‘in consultation with Lambeth Borough Council we have formulated a noise management strategy to ensure that on site levels are kept within an acceptable range’. They then provided the number of a hotline ‘should you feel levels at your property are higher than you expect. Our team will then be able to attend your property to take further noise readings and make any subsequent adjustments to the sound levels in the square’

Wayne explains, ‘This is our first festival and we want local people to feel involved – and also keep the Council happy. So we kept it to just the venues that are immediate neighbours to see how it goes. If it is a success then maybe we will have bigger plans for next year.’

Here is the complete festival lineup and timetable.
