The organisers of the bid to raise nearly £1 million to build a giant sculpture opposite Brixton Tube station to commemorate David Bowie say that, despite only getting pledges worth £50,000, they will continue with attempts to celebrate the musician in Brixton where he was born.
Charlie Waterhouse, creative director of This Ain’t Rock’n’Roll design agency, said on the Crowdfunder site that: “We’ve learned a hell of a lot. And we’ll be able to plough that learning back into the project, and return with a ZiggyZag #2 that’s even better (and hopefully a bit cheaper)”.
Just under 700 people had pledged money for the project in a campaign that was ended a week early.
Local people living near the proposed sculpture in Tunstall Road besides Morleys had expressed concern about lack of consultation around the project and its possible impact on an area already difficult to live in.
It was launched outside Brixton at a South Bank event backed by Lambeth council.
A million quid. Blimey. Let alone the lack of consultation…
