Katrina Wright tells us about combatting fly-tipping with urban gardening on Endymion Road and Helix Road
Residents in Endymion Road, with the assistance of neighbouring Helix Road, were fed up of having to pick their way through rubbish from fly-tippers. It gave a grotty impression of a really great neighbourhood. So, in the autumn a group of residents turned over a plot of empty land that was too convenient for all sorts of “relief” for passers-by. They planted dozens of bulbs which are now beginning to pop their heads out of the soil. Endymion is the proper name for bluebells but daffs and tulips will do for 2015.
Encouraged by the attention it drew and how it stopped casual littering, they turned to the “grot spot” at the junction of Helix and Endymion. A regular dumping ground. A broken wooden bed awaiting council collection from a nearby street was the incitement and the raw materials for a large planter to fill the spot. Everyone pitched in one freezing sunny Sunday and now you can see a lovely planter filled with donated soil, shrubs, plants and paint from all over – Endymion, Helix and Leander all chipped in.
If you can ‘t find old wood, or you don’t have enough contributions, Lambeth Freshview will provide it all free of charge! Now we can walk by with pride.
Looks lovely, good luck!! Just want to add – you can contact the council about arranging a community freshview session for your street – email Freshview@lambeth.gov.uk and have a look at the website for more info: http://lambeth.gov.uk/parking-transport-and-streets/street-and-road-maintenance/community-freshview-guide
