Brixton has become the place in London where food trends start. From the restaurants that have been able to establish new chains from their small beginnings in the area, the chains who seek kudos by coming here to the pop ups that mean there is something different everyday of the week, Brixton has become synonymous with food.
The only problem is that there’s so much to eat and drink in Brixton, it’s hard to know where to begin with sampling it all and that’s where Fox and Squirrel come in with their guided walks. Offering creative walks for the culturally curious around London, their highly knowledgeable guides seek to show you behind the scenes of their area of expertise. Whether it’s history, photography or food, they aim to get you to see things you’d never noticed before.
Their food walk in Brixton on Saturday 29th November is guided by the food writer Lindsay Faller (who writes for us here at the Brixton Blog and Bugle) and it will show you a whole side of the area you haven’t tasted before. Begin with an Ethiopian coffee ceremony and berbere platter before moving on to the Saturday tradition of Colombian roast stuffed pork with Portuguese vinho verde and locally brewed beers along the way. You’ll finish up by sampling Trinidadian codfish fritters, goat roti and organic salted caramel gelato.
In between each of the 7 courses, you’ll get the chance to meet the traders, see the ebb and flow of the market, absorb the atmosphere and meet other people keen to experience the Brixton beyond the obvious. It’s a good way to introduce yourself to the area if you’ve moved in recently or see what’s changed if you’ve been here for years. Places are limited and are £70 per person. The walks can be booked through Fox and Squirrel’s site.
