A woman in her 8os died this morning following a collision with a lorry in Stockwell Park Walk, Brixton.
Update: Lorry driver arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving
The Stockwell Park Road has now reopened after the accident which happened at about 11.30am at the back of the Brixton Academy, near the junction with Brixton Road.
Despite efforts of ambulance crews and the London Air Ambulance, the pedestrian died at the scene.
A spokesperson for London Ambulance Service told Brixton Blog that it sent an ambulance, single responder and the helicopter to the scene. She added: “Sadly one person, a woman in her eighties, was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor from the air ambulance.”
A TfL alert reads: “Stockwell Park Walk has been closed at the junction with Stockwell Road.
“Traffic is being diverted via the bus lane towards Brixton Road. Northbound Brixton Road is slow moving with queues from Brixton Hill.”
Gavin Springett saw the air ambulance land near the scene, at Stockwell Skate Park. He Tweeted: “Just another day in #Brixton air ambulance by work @BrixtonBlog.” He also posted the picture on the right.
Another Twitter user, @Mr_Guwu, said he saw a woman being struck by a car and then a lorry, before the lorry stopped.
The fatal collision comes on a day that hundreds of police are stopping lorry drivers, cyclists and other road users to talk about road safety as part of Operation Safeway.
The Brixton Blog will continue to update this page.

Hi. Condolences to the elderly lady who was fatally injured today. I am an HGV driver myself and are working in and around brixton re-paving the footpaths. I drove past the incident not long after it happened. I believe a lot more can be done to prevent incident like this in and/or near busy town centres. For example… There used to be barriers in the central reservation of brixton road outside brixton underground station. These are now gone! …. Allowing anyone and everyone to cross between the stationary buses at the bus stops and the slow moving traffic beside them. I am forever in my front and side mirrors when passing this area as so many people walk out from behind buses without even looking when there is a crossing not even 30 yards away. I drive a 32 ton 12 wheeler so when negotiating my way past the parked buses whilst having cyclists passing one side and motorcycles the other, pedestrians crossing throughout that whole stretch just makes things harder than they need be! This is just one example but it is endless! More needs no be done in places like this to prevent pedestrians from J walking freely when there are so many large vehicles (buses and lorrys) trying to get through. Once again RIP to the lady. Unfortunately things need changing.
[…] A woman in her 80s dies after being hit by a bus in Brixton. […]
Deepest condolences to the families. RIP.
A request to this blog: please call this a ‘crash’ or ‘collision’ not an ‘accident’ – for it rarely is a case of being an accident, the majority of causes are ‘failed to look’; one other request: shy away from pigeon-holing…Rather than ‘pedestrian’ say a person, or a person who was walking. Pigeon-holing detaches us from the reality that someone’s special someone lost their life.
It was closed again at 2pm as we came by on the bus. Apparently another accident.
