Two of Brixton’s most dedicated workers for young people and the community are recognised in the New Years Honours list announced today (31 December).

Pastor Lorraine Jones-Burrell, founder and chief executive officer of theDwayne Simpson Foundation, is made an MBE, Member of the Order of the British Empire, for services to young people and to tackling knife crime.

Steadman Scott, co-founder of Afewee football academy and boxing gym based in Brixton Rec, receives a Medal of the Order of the British Empire.

Pastor Lorraine launched the Dwayne Simpson Foundation 10 years ago. It is named for her son Dwayne, who lost his life to knife crime in Brixton.

Afewee was co-founded by Steadman Scott and Tony Goldring in 1997, starting as a grass roots football club based at Crystal Palace sports centre, moving to Streatham Common Park two years later. Its Brixton-based boxing club was founded after the 2011 riots in London.
