Much of central Brixton, including the main Brixton Road past the Tube, remained cordoned off in the early hours of this morning (17 July) after a fire that began in a storeroom near the 5 Guys restaurant on Electric Lane.

Contrary to reports in some media, the fire was not in Brixton market.

Fifteen London Fire Brigade (LFB) appliances and about 100 firefighters attended the incident.

LFB said the ground floor of a two-storey warehouse was destroyed by the fire and part of the first floor and roof were damaged. Around 50 people left the building before the brigade arrived. There were no reports of any injuries.

The brigade was called at 9pm and the fire was under control by 30 minutes after midnight.

Crews from Clapham, West Norwood, Peckham, Old Kent Road, Chelsea and surrounding fire stations were at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
