Local grandparents and elders from Extinction Rebellion will support International Youth Climate Action Day on Saturday 5 December with the message: Our Present – Their Future.
They will set up an alternative Christmas tree opposite Brixton tube station from 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm and decorate it with presents like “Clean Air” and “Green Jobs”.
The event is part of a nationwide action by Extinction Rebellion Grandparents and Elders, who are extremely concerned about the impact of the environmental crisis on the younger generation.
Sally Lynes from Southwark XR said: “The future of children across the world is at stake and the best present we can give them is a safe planet.
“Our group supports young people campaigning in this climate emergency.”
Charmian Kenner from Lambeth XR said: “The government’s ten-point plan to reach net zero by 2050 is too little, too late.
“A crucial first step is to pass the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill to ensure Britain meets its climate targets, and the Future Generations Bill so every policy protects children’s lives for years to come.’
Our Present – Their Future is also running as a window poster campaign that everyone can join throughout December.
Details are on XR Grandparents and Elders Facebook page.
