Brixton’s Christmas Tree is placed in Windrush Square

This year Brixton’s Christmas Tree has been installed in Windrush Square to mark the 72nd anniversary since the arrival of HMT Empire Windrush.

The tree, funded by the Brixton Business Improvement District, is usually found on Tunstall Road. Managing Director Gianluca Rizzo said: “To celebrate the arrival of the Windrush Generation who shaped Brixton we chose to place our Christmas Tree on Windrush Square.”

Due to the pandemic the BID were unable to host their usual switching on ceremony which see musicians from local schools as well as Brixton Chamber Orchestra performing for locals.

The Mayor of Lambeth Philip Normal, Elly Foster, Co-Chair of Brixton BID and Michael Williams from the Black Cultural Archives joined Gianluca Rizzo for a photograph to celebrate the new location of the tree and kick off the festive period.
