Blue Star House on Stockwell Road in central Brixton is set to undergo a transformation.
Out go utilitarian former council offices, in comes “a prominent island site” with “great natural light pouring in through large windows, which also provide show-stopping views towards central London”.
The property was sold for redevelopment to Derwent London plc in January this year.
It has started with the vacant fifth and seventh floors.
Its website for the transformed floors bigs up Brixton’s attractiveness to business, claiming: “Brixton tells a fascinating story of evolution culminating in a vibrant, diverse and exciting culture – a honeypot for attracting dynamic and innovative businesses.”
A brochure for the new development says: “This is an exciting opportunity to join a community of creative start-ups, small businesses and established brands whilst benefitting from the excellent connectivity and vibrancy Brixton has to offer.”
The Blue Star House transformation was designed by architects Carmody Groarke, who were also involved recently in alterations to Brixton’s covered markets.
They and New York based interior designers The Morris Project were commissioned by Hondo Enterprises, which runs the markets on a day-to-day basis, to work on changes to heating and lighting while protecting the buildings’ listed status, which is the architects’ specialty.
“Both Carmody Groake and The Morris Project have advised on minor improvements to the market, such as new lighting and heating, in order to support traders in 2021,” a spokesperson for Hondo said.
“All changes described above have already been implemented and are not major structural changes.
“Instead, they are amendments that enhance traders’ units, with the intention of increasing footfall and the offer available for the local community.”
