Brixton’s Christmas got under way yesterday (29 November) as Philip Normal, deputy mayor of Lambeth, joined the chief executive of Morleys, Nigel Blow to light the candles on the Brixton Business Improvement District (BID) Christmas tree opposite the Tube station.
Passers-by stopped to listen to the Archbishop Sumner school steel band from Kennington and the Brixton Chamber Orchestra – who played seasonal music as darkness fell.
Nigel Blow said that the Morleys Store Group now has eight stores, but the whole group is still called Morleys and its first store, in Brixton, will next year get a multi-million pound refurbishment, confirming the company’s continuing faith in Brixton as a top place to shop.
Also on hand were local councillors and BID representatives.
And don’t forget Corpus Christi primary school who sang there at 5pm plus at The Department Store for the unveiling of the new lights and earlier at Sainsburys on Brixton Water Lane to raise money for charity.
See our story on Winter Windows. Unfortunately we did not forget about the Water Lane event … nobody told us about it.
