I like beer and I like food so when the competition winners from our ticket giveaway couldn’t make it on the night (they’ve an invite to a future event) Ms K and I took the opportunity to go along to the King&Co’s FourPure food and beer pairing ourselves.
Nick and Rachel from FourPure were on hand to give an introduction to the Bermondsey based brewery and background and history for each of the beers. The King & Co’s resident chef* Greg had prepared a six course tasting menu. Over the six months he’s shown that a gastropub menu doesn’t have to be boring and tonight he was able to show his skills over a range of dishes.
As well as some old favourites, FourPure brought along a beer new enough that it had come with Nick in a cab rather than along with the main delivery. The fruit flavours of the Trail Head Guava IPA were matched with a ceviche of tiger prawn with mango and coriander.
Surprise of the evening was a pairing of “Spice Route Milkshake Pale Ale” with a Chocolate rice pudding brûlée. The chai latte spices gave set off the chocolate perfectly. Conventional wisdom would have paired the Bourbon and Maple syrup Imperial Stout with the desert but that was actually much better suited to the saltiness of the crispy oyster served earlier.
While some of the courses were very much tasters a good sized portion of authentic Thai Curry (served with a fresh American Pale Ale) ensured we didn’t go home hungry.
If this sounds like your sort of evening on 12 June The King&Co are holding a brewers banquet to celebrate the 5th birthday of Brixton’s London Beer Lab with food from new pop-up-in-residence Malt & Pepper
