Ten engines at Canterbury Crescent Fire

Ten fire engines and 72 firefighters  tackled a fire in a ground floor flat in Canterbury Crescent in central Brixton this afternoon (11 June).

The ground floor flat was badly damaged by the blaze. The fire also damaged the first and second floors of the 16-storey block.

About 50 people were evacuated from the block. A man, a pregnant woman and a girl suffered from smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by London ambulance service.

Thick black smoke could be seen for miles around and the London Fire Brigade 999 control took 36 emergency calls.

The brigade was called at 13.19 and the fire was under control by 14.44. Its cause is being investigated..
