Your guide to what’s happening in Brixton this week
Tuesday 26 April: Dsantos Dance UK has a fantastic weekly night of Salsa classes at St Matthew’s whether you are brand new or already an avid dancer. Fun & professionally run lessons, great people to meet and of course lots of great Salsa. £8. 8pm to 11.30pm.
Tuesday 26: Fashion brand McIndoe Design has been awarded a two week residency at Pop Brixton thanks to The Collective Foundation, the scheme designed to give aspiring artists and entrepreneurs the chance to showcase their product rent-free in a high-footfall area. The South London Brand provides unique menswear and womenswear with prices ranging from £10-£45. All garments are cotton, with every single print hand-drawn in their studio by designer and owner Maddy.
Wednesday 27: Brixton NCT (National Childbirth Trust – a parenting charity) run free walks and talks in Brockwell Park, as well as postnatal teas and first aid classes. This Wednesday, pop your baby in a carrier or buggy and walk around the park with other parents. Meet volunteers Emma & Jane at the One O’clock club, next to the adventure playground. 10am to 11.30am. Free
Thursday 28: Cecil Reuben presents a Roots Rock Reggae Special Shining Stars Showcase at Hootanny’s featuring Mandee, Jay Jay and Subujah Band. £3. 9pm to 2am.
Thursday 28: Free University London are showing The Forgotten Soldiers, a documentary about the Somaliland Camel corps, at Angell Delight Community Centre, Overton House, Angell Town. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the director. 6.30pm to 8pm. Free.
Friday 29: Hospitality returns to O2 Academy Brixton, the venue they call their “South-London rave emporium” and will be blasting out high-energy drum ’n’ bass into the early hours. Featuring Camo & Krooked, Maduk, London Elektricity, S.P.Y, Keeno, Breakage, Ulterior Motive, Hugh Hardie, Krakota, FD, Bcee, Total Recall and Tyke. £26+. 9pm.
Saturday 30: Back for it’s ninth year, The Modern Movement, south London’s free festival celebrating 20th century design, is taking place on 30th April & 1st May 2016 at Brockwell Lido. Free. 10.00am to 4.30pm.
Saturday: Perfect Havoc Disco heads to Brixton Jamm for a bank holiday shindig with a line-up of British and Swedish dance music DJ talent. Brighton house duo, My Digital Enemy, nu-wave duo Digital Farm Animals, Sweden’s nu disco exports, Oliver Nelson and Tobtok, plus more breaking talent, will be performing. £10-15. 10pm to 5am.
Saturday: An intimate evening with DJ and Artist Jon Marsh at Whirled Cinema for a night of top quality music. Also supporting is Jon Riche Littler Ollie Drummond and D-A-M-O with visuals by gadgets and decoration by Bubbleworks. Tickets £10, available at residentadvisor.net. 10pm.
Sunday 1 May: Pop Brixton is hosting a special May Day Festival on Sunday May 1, offering visitors a Bank Holiday bonanza of feasting, dancing, shopping and more. There will be music throughout the day from Busk Brixton, with some of Brixton’s best street musicians playing across the site. Free. 10am to 11pm.
