Lost Dawn of the Dead Halloween special – Seb Fontaine interview

Lost Dawn returns to the roof terraces of Brixton’s Prince of Wales on 31 October for a special Mexican-themed Halloween night – the Lost Dawn of the Dead! Headlining is house DJ and Radio 1 resident Seb Fontaine, who returns to Brixton where he held his very first residency at the Fridge in the ’90s – we caught up with him to find out more.

How does it feel to be returning to play Brixton for Lost Dawn of the Dead?

I love playing in Brixton, always had great bars and clubs over the years. I used to love the parties that were held in the foyer of the Brixton Academy, such a great venue. I first saw Run DMC with the Beastie Boys there as well as a few Westworld parties. I’ve had some great nights in Brixton so pretty sure Lost Dawn of the Dead will up there with the best. A Halloween terrace set, what more could you want?

Seb Fontaine 1What’s a memorable highlight from your time playing at the Fridge?

Managing to keep your job!!! Every week the promoter would say “one of you tonight is going to get sacked so play your best”. It was scary, I was only young and the Fridge was my biggest gig, I wanted to keep it, but me and K-Gee always did OK.

How does the Brixton night scene of today compare with 1989?

It’s bigger and better now but you know how it is when you’re young, you really remember your first warehouse party or rap gig. It’s all about the time and the place.

What can people expect from your set on Halloween?

A dead good set (awful I know). Something befitting the terrace, there are very few places you can play on a terrace in the UK so will try and acknowledge that.

Are you going to dress up for Halloween?

Bloody hell I hadn’t thought about it, I might have to buy a new black shirt.

Other than playing at the Lost Dawn of the Dead what are you up to at the moment?

October is one of those amazing months. I have a gig at Ministry with Oaky, the Cream birthday and Amsterdam for ADE. On top of that I’m in charge of product strategy for a new company that lets you record DJ sets to your iPhone and share them along with everyone’s photos from the night.
