UPDATE: Firefighters have now freed the remaining two bus passengers.
At least six people are seriously injured after a bus crashed into a tree in Kennington this morning.
The 59 bus, which travels from Streatham Hill, through Brixton and on to Kings Cross, struck the tree on Kennington Road at about 10.50am, police say.
Police say two people, including a 19-year-old girl, are in critical condition.
A spokesman for the London Fire Brigade said: “Firefighters are attending a double decker bus that’s crashed into a tree on Kennington Road, Kennington.
“Around a dozen people are believed to have been injured and firefighters are working to release two people who are believed to be trapped.
“Four fire engines are on the scene from Soho, Westminster, and Lambeth fire stations.”
London Ambulance Service Tweeted: “We have been treating around 30 patients following the #kennington bus crash, six of whom are reported to be seriously injured.”
Two things are not sitting right with me this morning. How fast was this bus really travelling to be embedded around this tree and what material are buses being made with nowadays? The Bus involved in this accident crumpled like it was made out of tin; its speed wouldn’t have helped. With so many people relying on buses as a form of transport, they should be as safe as possible; we pay enough for the privilege. My thoughts are with those that were injured in this terrible accident.
