A Brixton-based community initiative promoting locally made goods is expanding its range to cover the whole of Lambeth Borough.

Makerhood, which was set up in Brixton three years ago, provides a website where local “makers” can advertise their wares – many of which are unique and handmade and can be customised upon request.

In 2012 they launched another project in West Norwood and starting this week all makers in Lambeth can join the venture.

makerhoodKristina Glushkova, co-founder of Makerhood, said: “This is an exciting time for Makerhood as we roll out the project to help people all over Lambeth find their local makers while helping makers promote their work and grow their businesses.

“The support from the local community, makers and volunteers so far has been fantastic. We hope this continues as we develop.”

Lambeth council is supporting the project by helping to finance the start-up costs of the expansion.

Cllr Jackie Meldrum, Deputy Leader of the Council, said: “We’ve worked hard at backing Makerhood’s efforts in West Norwood, and seen the great help they have provided to local creative businesses. On this basis the council has decided to support their bid to extend the project and help Makerhood with its aim of becoming self-sustainable in the next three years.”

Ellie Laycock runs Hunted and Stuffed, a shop that re-uses old textiles and transforms them into cushions, and was the first to join Makerhood. She said: “I think it’s such a fantastic endeavour to create a social enterprise that helps build a community and encourages people to flourish.”

Makerhood also organises an annual Christmas event where visitors can make their own Christmas cards and decorations. More details about the Make Your Own Christmas event can be found here.
