GUEST POST: Brixton Station Road Market is growing

Brixton green projectIn her first guest post for Brixton Blog, Rahima Fitzwilliam-Hall from Brixton Market Traders’ Federation introduces Blog readers to an innovative gardening project in the heart of town.

Summer is hanging on this year, and Brixton Station Road Market is growing – literally. We have new trees and our first planter boxes on site!

Jason, from Lambeth Council’s Freshview project, transformed reclaimed scaffolding boards into planter boxes and our friends at Brockwell Park Community Greenhouses grew plants especially for us. They also helped run a planting session at our Childrens Market, leaving behind a burst of greenery to be envied.

Tomatoes, fennel and beans are bedded in with fiery nasturtiums, pansies and, my favourite, borage. Borage has dusty green stems and little blue flowers that taste of cucumbers! Since we’re starting to grow as a food market it’s great having edible plants and flowers around. We can just imagine traders being inspired by the flavours and cafe’s picking the flowers for their vase.

Afras, a local DIY shop owner is kindly looking after the plants with help from other shopkeepers and traders. But we could always do with a hand – If you’re passing through feel free to give the plants a little water and care.

To top it all off, there are plans to install a rainwater collection system, meaning we’ll get to store rainwater for watering the plants and do our bit to ease the strain on London’s drains.  Big thanks to Brixton BID for making this possible.

The bigger picture here is to make Brixton Station Road a popular place for everyone – so the street markets continues to be used and loved in Brixton. Not to mention the benefit to the environment and urban bees, perhaps we’ll get our own hive next!

Come along to Brixton Station Road from 4pm tomorrow (September 3) to help us plant more boxes. Everyone welcome.

  1. Right here is the perfect web site for anyone who really wants to understand this topic.
You understand a whole lot its almost hard to argue with you (not that I actually would want to…HaHa).
You certainly put a fresh spin on a topic that’s been discussed for
many years. Great stuff, just wonderful!

  2. If your friend or family member has a pool,
consider getting them a portable outdoor shower for their birthday this summer.

joy of jumping and the pure freedom of bouncing are worth more
than we could ever imagine. Appropriate here are just a suitable few discounts readily available online and in the store
offering helpful deals on high-quality products that will
likely brighten up truly the dullest connected with British summers
for all the spouse and kids.
