Clapham Fire Station has been saved from closure by fire bosses after a widespread campaign by firefighters, residents, unions and local politicians.

A London Fire Brigade report, which emerged today, proposes that Clapham Fire Station should lose one fire appliance but, crucially, should stay open, as part of major cost saving exercise.

The station, which provides vital secondary cover for homes and businesses in Brixton, had been earmarked for closure in an earlier draft of the London Fire Safety Plan.

Lambeth council leader Lib Peck today that she was “delighted” by the news. She added: “We have been listened to and I want to thank the thousands of residents who have backed the campaign. And I want to thank the Mayor for listening to the overwhelming case against the closure plans.

‘This is great news for Lambeth. We remain concerned about losing one appliance and for other fire stations in London that are still threatened with closure.”

A march by firefighters and unions in May was featured on the front page of The Brixton Bugle as the newspaper joined the campaign to keep Clapham Fire Station open.
