Brixton’s Station Road Market showed the true value of community spirit when locals donated more than a ton of goods to give away absolutely free.
Thousands of residents took part in the Give and Take Market last Saturday, bringing clothes, books and household things they no longer needed, and taking away something else they really did.
Among the bounty given out for free and in good condition were children’s bikes, laptops, roller slates and musical instruments.
Organiser Rahima Fitzwilliam Hall, of Brixton Market Trader’s Federation, said: “We were completely overwhelmed by the donations received on the day and the market stalls were stacked high with stuff to give away. It goes to show how much generosity and community spirit there is in Brixton.”
“We feel really proud that this can happen on Brixton Station Road Market, thanks to the help of all the volunteers and the partnership with Veolia”
She added: “The event feels like it has momentum to become something of grand proportion in Brixton, a day to not just ‘get rid of’ but give away all your unwanted stuff and rummage for some new things, meet new people, spend time on the street market.”
Remakery workshops and community groups were also at the event, including picture frame making and a photo booth. Volunteers from the Restart project helped to repair broken electrical items, and representatives from the Brixton Blog, Brixton Pound and Brixton Foodbank were also on hand to showcase their projects.
The event, organised by BMTF with support from waste firm Veolia, was staffed by 10 willing and eager volunteers.
Volunteer Corinne Clarkson said: “I loved the day, thought it went really well and people were really keen to both Give and Take – a ton of waste recycled and a lot of people helped to get the stuff they need & want. Plus a great day for everyone helping out! I reckon it could build on this huge success and happen more – I think the community is keen.”
